    Unis tout new short courses

Universities are reinventing themselves with a new series of short courses to help retrain people who have lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Macquarie University, the University of Sydney, University of NSW, Western Sydney University, the University of Wollongong, Australian Catholic University and the Australian National University are among institutions introducing the courses that include higher education certificates for displaced workers.

A Macquarie University spokeswoman said it was finalising a range of Higher Education Certificate courses in areas including engineering, IT, biotechnology, environment, health and science at sub-bachelor, bachelor and postgraduate levels.

“Upon finishing their short course, students will be able to enrol in either a sub-bachelor diploma, bachelor degree, postgraduate diploma or masters degree depending on the certificate they completed,” she said.

The University of Sydney said it was expecting to offer up to 10 courses at the graduate certificate level in a range of subjects – including infection and immunity, IT, educational leadership, urban planning and environmental science.

The University of NSW said it will offer eight short courses in terms two and three in areas including engineering, computing, environmental management, construction project management and education.

Western Sydney University said it would offer intensive short courses online to “rapidly up-skill and re-skill displaced workers and contribute to areas of national workforce need”.

Australian Catholic University Provost Professor Zlatko Skrbis said universities had to “reinvent themselves” to provide new ways of learning and times of upheaval demanded radical solutions.

The University of Wollongong will offer 23 short courses to help workers who lose their jobs during the pandemic to boost their skills and retrain for new careers. The six-month higher education and graduate certificate courses will be offered in nursing, health, science and education.
