ACU appoints prof of healthy ageing

Former Australian Association of Gerontology president Laurie Buys has been appointed as Professor of Healthy Ageing at the Australian Catholic University, Australian Ageing Agenda reports.

Professor Buys, who started her new role this month, is based at the university’s Brisbane campus.

She will work across the university’s faculties and portfolios and directly with executive dean health of sciences Professor Suzanne Chambers.

In her role, Professor Buys will lead the university’s commitment to healthy ageing through industry engagement, research, national and international collaborations and service innovation.

“I am excited to join ACU in this new role and will focus on building partnerships that deliver new approaches to conceptualising healthy ageing and supporting older people to age well,” Professor Buys said in a statement.

Professor Buys is the former national president of the AAG and her most recent research focused on longevity and ways to deliver better social and economic outcomes for older people.

ACU vice chancellor and president Professor Zlatko Skrbis said in a statement that the heart of ACU’s mission as a catholic university is to promote human dignity in all aspects of life.
