Family dedicates life to those in need

More than half of Aussies who receive government support still struggle to put food on the table, 9Now reports.

But in an effort to assist those in need, one Sydney family has dedicated their life to helping others as part of the Salvation Army team.

Every Wednesday morning, Joyce and Hilton's family visit Salvos to lend a helping hand.

They all work together to set up rows of fresh produce, freezers full of meat, tables full of sweets and water on the front yard of their suburban home.

There's no money to be made from the food stalls, just the chance to make someone's life a little bit easier.

Joyce and Hilton have been married for 64 years and have made helping others a family affair.

"If you see a person hurting, turn aside from what you're doing and go and help them," Hilton told A Current Affair about his philosophy.

Customers who pay the family a visit leave with much more than groceries for the week.

"These people were strangers, they came from countries thousands of kilometres away, but they meet us today like we're their mum and dad," Hilton said.

For many, it's the only way they can provide food for their families.

"There is no means test here and you get a hug and you pick up your stuff," Hilton said.

Joyce said helping customers brings her joy.

Volunteers on hand like Imran, who arrived in Australia in 2018, said he also finds joy in helping out and giving back.

"Whatever I got, I got from Hilton," Imran said.

Hilton and Joyce's son, Bruce, his wife Carolyn and their son Lachlan have all followed in their footsteps.

Now there are three generations of Salvos in the family.
