Victoria's call to action: submit your ideas for a secure food future

The Victorian government is rallying for local citizen’s input towards an inquiry aimed at securing the state's food supply

Despite Australia's surplus food production, vulnerabilities persist in distribution networks, as evidenced by recent global shocks including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Led by the Legislative Assembly Environment and Planning Committee of Victoria the inquiry zooms in on the peri-urban food system (zones of transition from rural to urban land), exploring aspects such as urban sprawl's impact on arable land, planning controls to safeguard agriculture, and bolstering Victoria's food resilience.

Hot on the heels of a federal inquiry by the Australian Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, which unveiled 35 recommendations to address food security, the state government’s initiative signals a push for a robust food security strategy.

Victorians are being encouraged to join the conversation and contribute their insights to shape the future of food security throughout the state. With submissions open until Friday, 26 April 2024, it's just one avenue for paving the path towards a resilient food system.
