Coles Supermarkets in Queensland to run on Solar Power

CleanCo and Coles have solidified their commitment to green energy by finalising an agreement to power Coles stores in Queensland with electricity from Neoen’s recently completed Western Downs Green Power Hub, the largest solar farm in Australia.

The Western Downs Green Power Hub, situated near Chinchilla, was completed in April of this year and includes a battery equipped with Tesla Megapack 2XL units to enhance capacity and functionality.

CleanCo’s and Coles partnership stems from a contract signed in 2020, aiming to transition over 90% of Coles' Queensland sites to renewable energy from July 2022. CleanCo's collaboration with Neoen was initiated through a government deal, signalling a significant step towards sustainable and ethical procurement practices in the region.

Jo Brown, Coles Queensland State Manager, highlighted the milestone as she said, “Thanks to the completion of the country’s largest solar farm and this landmark partnership, more than 95% of our electricity needs in Queensland are supplied by CleanCo.”

However, attention is drawn to the need for a comprehensive approach to renewable energy use, including the transition of Coles’ delivery fleets to electric vehicles.

Procurement Australia is a proven procurer of renewable energies demonstrated in Victoria and New South Wales through our mutually beneficial energy partnerships between Procurement Australia and Alinta Energy (Victoria), and Red Energy (New South Wales).
