Foodservices: Food Safety Overview

The safety of food in aged care homes cannot be underestimated. At Church Resources, we understand that it is important to make sure that any organisation producing food for any vulnerable person follows a food safety plan. It is equally important to get regular updates.

Why is food safety a priority in Aged-Care facilities?

The Elderly are at risk of food poisoning due to their age, compromised immune system and chronic diseases. Therefore, they are more susceptible to microorganisms found in foods which have not been handled correctly. It is so easy for food poisoning to occur as it only takes 2 hours for a dangerous level of microorganisms to build up when food is prepared or held in the temperature danger zone between 5°C and 37°C. Higher risk foods include any foods which are not cooked to reduce the microorganism level. This includes sandwiches, salads and cold deserts.

Food safety is a crucial control aspect of the foodservice system. It is essential to maintain strong food safety and follow the organisational food safety plan. What else is important is to keep up to date with food safety changes, how food safety practices can be improved and how to monitor your food safety more efficiently. Food safety plans were introduced over a decade and makes it one of the most important risk management processes in age and community care food services.

Church Resources is planning a food safety event to help aged care and community care organisation to stay up to date with the latest developments in food safety. This event will be discussing food safety,  industry updates and food safety technology.

What you will learn:

  • Update on food safety plans and what is happening in the food safety space through an auditor’s update
  • Residents’ access to outside food sources – supermarkets and meal delivery services, what is the risk and how to manage
  • Food safety technology – how it can monitor, improve and support the management of food safety plans
