    Beanies keep Queenslanders warm

Queenslanders armed with crochet hooks and knitting needles have donated thousands of beanies for those in need this winter, ABC News reports.

From Mackay to Brisbane, hundreds of beanies were made at community-organised "knit-a-thon" events across the state on Friday.

The handmade beanies, scarves and blankets will be distributed by GIVIT and other local charities as part of ABC Radio Brisbane's Knit a Beanie with Feeney project.

Over 2,200 beanies have been knitted or crocheted so far, as well as 1,500 non-beanie items.

Yvonne Ritson of Queensland Spinners, Weavers & Fibre Artists, which hosted a knit-a-thon in Brisbane, is "very proud of everyone's efforts".

"Not just our team members and those here in the studio, but also the people across Queensland who just did their little bit," Ms Ritson said.

"Whether it was one beanie, whether it was a dozen shawls, it all makes a difference and it all looks fantastic."

Other knit-a-thon events were held in Hervey Bay, Toowoomba and Bundaberg.

GIVIT communications manager Kate Fisher is "blown away" by the generosity of knitters and crocheters across Queensland.

"To see all these beautiful people give up their Friday afternoon to knit something for someone who is doing it tough is really special," she said.

Ms Fisher says the beanies will be distributed to neighbourhood centres, people experiencing homelessness, and those at domestic and family shelters.

She says GIVIT will also provide the handmade items to organisations that make care packs for children entering fostering care.
