Procurement Australia's New South Wales Power Purchase Agreement

This power purchase agreement (PPA) in New South Wales, the second in Procurement Australia’s growing energy portfolio, will provide participants with solutions to procure more renewables, even in the midst of a volatile energy market.

How our NSW PPA works

This PPA is a New South Wales-based agreement. Facilitated by Procurement Australia, the 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Snowy Hydro through Red Energy will utilise the Metz Solar Farm to provide signed councils with secure 100% renewable energy for their nominated large market, small market and public lighting sites commencing in a staged approach from January 2023.

About the Metz Solar Farm

The Metz Solar Project (MSP or the Project) is a 115MWac, 141MWdc greenfield project located 15km east of Armidale in New South Wales. The site is 430ha spread across land historically used for agricultural production. The site comprises a substation, solar panel array, and internal access tracks.

The development is expected to bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to both the Armidale region and NSW.  With many similar investments expected over the coming years, Armidale and the New England Renewable Energy Zone will be a national leader in the field.

Which NSW councils and authorities have signed on?

Procurement Australia is thrilled to have the following seven councils onboard as part of our latest PPA.

Our founding members of the NSW PPA include Albury City Council, Bega Valley Shire Council, Camden Council, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, Penrith City Council, Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollongong City Council.

NSW-Councils

We’re delighted to have this diverse range of council members with us as part of this historic deal in New South Wales.

What are the benefits?

As with our original Victorian PPA, this PPA delivers beyond surface level ‘green’ solutions.

This PPA with Snowy Hydro through Red Energy is the result of a competitive product creation and tender process, the overcoming of numerous challenges presented by Australia’s increasingly complex energy landscape, and resilience from Procurement Australia’s talented Strategic Sourcing team.

This PPA will deliver:

The individual renewable energy requirements of each participant

Price certainty in both power and LGC costs across the life of the PPA
Elimination of power and LGC price volatility
Generous load flex and load roll in allowances and portfolio level protection

What’s next for the New South Wales PPA

We are committed to ensuring that we support our seven NSW participants with their individual renewable energy requirements. We are also dedicated to assisting other councils and authorities to meet their own renewable energy targets.

A third Procurement Australia PPA, also planned for New South Wales, is already being negotiated on the back of intensifying interest from other councils and regulatory bodies.

We encourage interested councils and government authorities to speak with an energy procurement specialist to stay up-to-date on this upcoming PPA EOI.
